The native of Mombasa, Ghana, said he grew up enamored with America.
Those were the Michael Jordan days, he said with a smile. It seemed like my friends always had the good stuff - the Air Jordans, so I associated the United States with good things.
Kariuki said his crush on America only grew stronger after a neighbor moved to the U.S. and acquired a green card, and when he learned that one of his father s friends attended the University of Illinois.
