New Delhi, April 12 (IANS) Concerned over possible imposition of lockdowns due to a resurgence in coronavirus infections, the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has urged the government to keep factories free from lockdowns and requested for essential service sector tag for the labour-intensive apparel export industry.

NEW DELHI: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said the country s apparel industry must aim to capture double-digit share in global fabric exports from the current level of 5-6 per cent.
The Vice President also called for upskilling textile and apparel workers and adopting the latest technologies to gain competitiveness in exports and to capture the global market.
We should aspire to soon reach a double-digit share in exports of fabrics from the current 5-6 per cent, Naidu said while inaugurating a virtual platform of apparel export promotion council (AEPC).
The Vice President said the sector should ponder upon the reasons why India, despite being the leading producer and exporter of cotton, jute, silk and MMF yarns, lacks the competitive edge in fabrics and apparels when compared to Bangladesh and China. ....

Auto driver held for killing woman | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: The Tirupur rural police on Thursday night arrested an autorickshaw driver for murdering an elderly woman and stealing five sovereigns of gold mangalsutra and Rs 10,000 from her on December 30. The accused has been identified as B Sakthivel, 35, of Thiruvalluvar Nagar at Vellakoil in Tirupur district.
Police said Arumugam, 65, and wife A Eswari, 55, were residing on Moolanur Road at Vellakoil in Tirupur district. Their son Udhayakumar, 35, married Selvarani, 34, 12 years ago and was residing in a house at Sultanpet in Coimbatore district. The couple did not have a child.
Arumugam has been running a furniture shop on Semmandampalayam Road at Vellakoil for the last seven years. He used to send the furniture items to his customers’ place in Sakthivel’s auto. A few weeks ago, Arumugam discussed with Sakthivel about his son not having a child. Sakthivel advised Arumugam to perform parihara puja ritual at his furniture shop on December ....
