Fort Wool in the Hampton Roads Harbor made ths year’s list of the most endangered historic places in Virginia because deferred maintenance now threatens the pre-Civil War landmark.
So did Mount Calvary Cemetery Complex in Portsmouth, which is losing its fight with constant flooding.
Most of what were once known as “Green Book” sites in Hampton Roads are gone. These were Black-owned and open-to-all restaurants, stores and gas stations that were listed in guides for Black travelers during segregation. These were the spots Blacks could go when they weren’t welcomed elsewhere.

Preservation Virginia has updated its list of historic places across the state that face imminent or sustained threats to their integrity – the goal being to encourage continued advocacy for these places while offering solutions for their preservation.
This year, a record number of nominations were received.
“This year’s list underscores the diverse and complex history of Virginia,” said Preservation Virginia CEO Elizabeth S. Kostelny. “From connections to George Washington at River Farm in Alexandria to the legacy of Jim Crow laws and Civil Rights as embodied in Green Book Sites, these tangible connections to the past are irreplaceable and offer so many educational opportunities.

Trevilian Station, Battle of – Encyclopedia Virginia

SUMMARY
The Battle of Trevilian Station, fought June 11–12, 1864, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), was a victory for Confederate cavalry under Wade Hampton when they turned back Union raiders under the command of General Philip H. Sheridan. Fought solely by cavalry, this was the largest such battle during the war (the larger Battle of Brandy Station, fought a year earlier during the Gettysburg Campaign, involved some infantry). Union general-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant had hoped that Sheridan’s troopers might destroy the Virginia Central Railroad west to Charlottesville while distracting Robert E. Lee‘s Army of Northern Virginia enough that Grant might sneak across the James River and around to Petersburg. Instead, Hampton’s cavalry blocked the way, and although Sheridan claimed to have decommissioned the railroad, he was unable to fulfill the last part of Grant’s plan: to reinforce Union general David Hunter in the Shenandoah Valley.
