Leaders of historic Savannah, Ga., voted Thursday to strip the name of former U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun from the public square named in his honor more than 170 years ago. Supporters of the move say the politician from neighboring South Carolina spent decades advocating slavery and the right of states to secede; opponents say Calhoun deserved the honor for his years of government service and statesmanship.
