Court blames India s election commission for rise in COVID-19 cases

High Court of Indian state of Madras says the Election Commission of India officials should be tried on murder charges.
Court warns that it may stop ECI from counting votes on May 2 if it does not share a blueprint on COVID-19 protocol at counting centres.
“You are the only institution that is singularly responsible for the situation today,” remarks chief justice of the Madras High Court.
Election Commission officers should be booked on murder charges probably,” Justice Sanjib Banerjee remarked, as per
LiveLaw.
Later in the day, the Madras High Court in its order stated that at no cost can counting become a catalyst for a further surge. Despite the court s repeated orders regarding COVID protocol, its significance may have been lost on the Election Commission. Public health is of paramount importance and it is distressing that Constitutional authorities have to be reminded in such regard, the court said in its order.
On 22 April, after being pulled up by the Calcutta High Court for the second time, the EC announced guidelines for the electoral campaign, mandating that poll rallies could only be conducted with a maximum of 500 people. The EC further added that road shows and vehicle rallies were to be banned with immediate effect.

Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Justice Sanjib Banerjee on Tuesday inaugurated the District Munsif -Cum-Judicial Magistrate Court at Kunnam in Perambalur district through video conference from Chennai.
In his presidential address, Justice Sanjib Banerjee said the Bar and the Bench were two sides of the same coin. There was a physical aspect to access to justice that was being fulfilled by creating the infrastructure.
“But, the more wholesome access to justice was how we deal with the litigants and others who we are to serve,” Justice Sanjib Banerjee observed.
