(JTA) — Drawing a line between its mission of Holocaust remembrance and the ravages inflicted by the coronavirus pandemic, the March of the Living honored Dr. Anthony Fauci with an award for “moral courage in medicine” on the eve of Yom Hashoah, Israel’s Holocaust commemoration day.
The award to Fauci, who for decades has been the top U.S. official handling infectious diseases, culminated in an online program on Wednesday called “Medicine and Morality.”
In his acceptance remarks, Fauci referred to Maimonides, the medieval Jewish scholar and physician.

As the CEO of Pfizer, Albert Bourla made headlines for his professional accomplishments, leading the pharmaceutical giant that jointly developed one of the Covid-19 vaccines. But few know about his family history. Today, on National Holocaust Remembrance Day, he decided to change that.
In its mission to “explore the ethical implications of the medical transgressions that took place during the Holocaust,” The Maimonides Institute for Medicine Ethics & The Holocaust (MIMEH) has created a space for Holocaust survivors and healthcare professionals to share their stories. At their event “Medicine and Morality: Lessons From The Holocaust And Covid-19,” Bourla — whose parents Mois and Sara Bourla are amongst the 2,000 Jews in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, to have survived through the Holocaust — is set to make an appearance.

If it hadn’t been for the kindness of an uncle and the insight of his grandfather, Pfizer CEO Dr. Albert Bourla, a Thessaloniki native, would never have been born.
A descendant of the Jews of Greece’s second-largest city, Bourla’s ancestors, like those of almost all the Thessaloniki Jews, had come to the country after the edict of 1492 in Spain. Invited to live in the country by the Ottoman overlords at the time, they put down roots and actually flourished there, in peace and freedom, for centuries.
