sharks mourners on losing it, a mistake, the line hitting a proper rubbing the boat. we are more nervous about possibly losing this once-in-a-lifetime fish over the actual shark causing damage to us. it was absolutely amazing. i wish we could do it again tomorrow. >> homeboy i can hear the excitement in your voice still. so you tag to the shark throwing it back in the water. is it just to track the shark or do you hope to learn something from this 1000-pound hammerhead shark? >> i tagged these white sharks in the wintertime. i left my satellite and acoustic tags of the house. i did not have any sophisticated equipment with me. i had it more like these tags that do not give a lot of data. it's all going to really give data summit recaptured the speed by numbers are on their and it will give them kind of an idea where it came from and so forth. i did not get a satellite tag on it. we've got some stuff on it. it is a pretty good chance you
other than where they were found. >> how about that, jessica? not only are they fixing them up, but they're going to track them. is this one of his tags? >> yes, this is one of the tags, but we're also going to put a satellite tag on him. the satellite tag would be like a gps unit and will give us signals 24/7 so we can tell where they are at any given time. >> phenomenal stuff. what have you found with some of the turtles that you've been tracking, that you released earlier in the year? >> we've had an incredible amount of information. we know they can travel long distances. the ones we released in november last year went all the way to the mouth of the river and come springtime they're back so we've been able to delineate their habitat and understand their movement and migration patterns. >> jessica, what do you think about this phenomenal animal? >> it's great to see positive news from the gulf. i have to say, that turtle's adorable too. i want to ask you about something on a more serious note or equally serious. i know you've talked to someone from noaa, the national oceanc n
ecosystem as well. you have to have them to keep the food chain going. >> here she is today going back to the waters where she was found. how significant is that? >> we want these guys back where they belong. we want them returned into the wild. so this is her day and her chance, her time. she's perfectly healthy a uz can tell. she has a satellite tag so we can track her movement. she's ready to go, she needs to go. >> sea turtles today aren't being shipped off to florida or texas. they're going to their own backyards. why is that important for louisiana? what does that tell us about gulf waters? >> the habitat for these animals is fine. always the best day when you can return an animal back to its habitat. >> really, really amazing just to see that turtle be put back into the water like that, alex. it's promising to know that these creatures, which really were in such jeopardy, can be returned back to the ecosystems that they're members of. >> okay. >> most of us thought that would never happen.
