Save Our Stages Act passes, hope on the horizon for independent music venues

But the ‘Save Our Stages’ Act passed in Congress as part of the COVID-19 relief bill.
This means some live venue operators would be eligible to receive grant funding as the industry continues to suffer financially from the pandemic.
The passing of the S.O.S. Act is a beacon of hope for these venues.
The National Independent Venue Association – which has been fighting for the act and raising money for independent venues during the pandemic – put out this statement last month, urging the act to be passed.

Year in Review: New Orleans took tough hits in 2020, but 'the music is going to come back'


In September, around the six-month mark of the pandemic shutdowns, trumpeter James Andrews ended a conversation with Gambit on an optimistic note.
Earlier this year, Andrews released a book with Monique Bornstein, “Born in The Treme,” and he was touring Europe when the shutdowns began. He scrapped the tour and got one of the last flights back from France. After that, he said, it was just a “domino effect” of lost work: Music venues closed, regular gigs were canceled and then the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and French Quarter Festival were first postponed and eventually called off.
Andrews was left in a “holding pattern.” But as the months ticked by, he started to work on new material and began performing small porch concerts or dropping into neighborhoods for small, physically distanced concerts. ....

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) confirmed the plan included consideration for SPA grants for theater operators and small-venue operators through the Save Our States Act.
These venues are so important to my state and so many other states across the country, Schumer added. They are the lifeblood of our communities. They were the first to close and will be the last to open. This bill gives them a fighting chance.
Pandemic restrictions on public gatherings have already caused many live entertainment venues and restaurants to close.
The bipartisan Save Our Stages Act was introduced to the Senate in July by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), after a survey by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) found that 90 percent of independent venues would close permanently before the end of 2020 without federal funding. ....
