The Houston Independent School District has talked a big game about transparency around COVID-19 cases within its school system, but doubt still abounds as to whether or not the district is doing everything it can to keep the public informed about just how well local schools are faring during the pandemic. Multiple sources have told the Houston Press that there are more confirmed positive coronavirus cases within district campuses than the stats on HISD’s public dashboard reflect. In his biennial State of the State address this week, Gov. Greg Abbott argued that he’s a tried-and-true conservative leader who Texans can trust to keep their state “the freedom capital of America.” He tried to make the case that the coronavirus pandemic’s worst days are behind us, and threw out a laundry list of right-wing policy priorities to set the stage for his 2022 re-election campaign — and potentially, a 2024 White House run after that. Nicholas family attorney Mike Doyle said he believes the two lawsuits filed Wednesday will ultimately be combined into one case in federal ...

Goines allegedly produced fabricated evidence that painted the married couple as heroin dealers, but only small amounts of cocaine and marijuana were found in their Harding Street home. The DA’s investigation later uncovered a scheme within HPD’s narcotics division to falsify work hours on police timesheets to collect fraudulent overtime payments...
