SCHENECTADY – Rick DeCarr, a sixth-grade English Language Arts/social studies teacher at Oneida Middle School, was named the Schenectady City School District 2021 Teacher of the Year Friday.
Interim Superintendent Aaron Bochniak, made the surprise announcement during DeCarr’s afternoon online class.
I have seen, firsthand, his commitment, innovation and creativity, care and kindness and, most importantly, the impact that he has on his students,” Bochniak said in a statement.
DeCarr, an educator in Schenectady since 2008, was nominated by Tony Farina, principal of Oneida Middle School. Farina said  DeCarr is a leader at both the building and district level. He has been integral in the district’s transition to remote learning in response to the pandemic, is also a leader ....

Rensselaer man charged with DWI in serious I-890 crash

SCHENECTADY State Police said they charged a Rensselaer man with drunken driving in connection with a December car accident on I-890 that caused a person to be flown to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police said Colin S. Rochelle, 38, was intoxicated when he was driving eastbound at about 9:30 p.m. Dec. 28  and struck 22-year-old Brittnei A. McFadden’s car head-on between exits 6 and 7 in the city of Schenectady, police said.
McFadden was flown to Albany Medical Center Hospital with serious injuries, and Rochelle was taken to Ellis Hospital.
Rochelle was charged with driving while intoxicated, first-degree unlicensed operation and aggravated vehicular assault, police said. ....

SCHENECTADY  The city school district will resume is hybrid program of in-person and remote classes for elementary school students on Monday.
The entire district switched to remote learning amid a surge of coronavirus cases late last year but hoped to resume the hybrid program in its elementary schools.
District spokeswoman Karen Corona confirmed the district will do just that on Monday. ....

SCHENECTADY City police officers dominated the list  of highest paid city employees last year by using overtime pay to, in some cases, to more than double their annual salaries.
The city s reliance on overtime to staff public safety shifts faced pressure earlier this year when Mayor Gary McCarthy urged city leaders find ways to cut overtime to stem fiscal problems caused by the coronavirus shutdown and the fear it would cause a drop in sales tax payments as well as revenue from Rivers Casino & Resort. ....
