The political newcomer’s campaign will focus “on people – not politics.” She collected the necessary 250 signatures for inclusion on the Sept. 21 ballot, joining City Councilors Rebecca Lisi and Michael J. Sullivan, School Committee Member Devin Sheehan, William ‘Billy’ Glidden, and Joshua Garcia, currently Blandford’s town administrator. In 1997, Caballero-Roca migrated to the U.S. from her native Havana, Cuba, eventually settling in Holyoke with her husband and two children in 1999. She taught Spanish at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts.

Morse will leave office March 26 to take on his new job as the town manager in Provincetown. City Council President Todd McGee will serve as acting mayor until new mayor is elected to a full term. “As of Friday, March 26, 2021, at 4:30 p.m., I will no longer be Mayor of Holyoke,” Morse wrote in an email Monday. “Upon my departure, City Council President Todd McGee will become acting Mayor for the duration of my term.” He added, “Please note that both Nilka Ortíz and Andrés Villada, longtime staff in the Mayor’s Office, will remain in the office at least through November of this year.”

Vazquez Matos took leave following a Feb. 8 School Committee meeting, where he stated he had COVID-19. He did not say if he still had the virus or recovered. At the time, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education would not comment on why Vazquez Matos was on leave, a continuing trend. An email seeking a direct comment from Vazquez Matos went unanswered. Vazquez Matos’ tenure as receiver of the Holyoke Public Schools began July 1. He previously served in the Hartford, Connecticut Public Schools.
