HOLYOKE When acting Holyoke Mayor Terence Murphy filed papers with the state’s Office of Campaign and Political Finance on Tuesday, some speculated that he would soon announce his run for elected mayor of the city. On Wednesday afternoon, Murphy assured constituents that this isn’t the case and also addressed reopening the city.
‘People, not politics’ for Holyoke Mayoral Candidate Gloria Caballero-Roca

HOLYOKE – Gloria Caballero-Roca became the sixth and first Latina mayoral candidate for the Sept. 21 mayoral primary. The political newcomer’s campaign will focus “on people – not politics.”
She collected the necessary 250 signatures for inclusion on the Sept. 21 ballot, joining City Councilors Rebecca Lisi and Michael J. Sullivan, School Committee Member Devin Sheehan, William ‘Billy’ Glidden, and Joshua Garcia, currently Blandford’s town administrator.
In 1997, Caballero-Roca migrated to the U.S. from her native Havana, Cuba, eventually settling in Holyoke with her husband and two children in 1999. She taught Spanish at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts.

HOLYOKE Another candidate has entered the race to become Holyoke’s next mayor.
Gloria Caballero Roca, a 55-year-old academic and educator, announced her candidacy on Friday. A Holyoker for more than 20 years, the Whiting Avenue resident said that as an Afro-Cuban she is excited to be the only Latina to have announced their candidacy for the position.
“Holyoke is ready for a change,” she said. “I’m so excited. I think I could be a wonderful person who would like to involve people in policy making. I would love to see this happen.”
