Iowa pays workers' comp for police academy carbon monoxide leak

The state will pay a settlement in connection with a carbon monoxide leak at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston that sent more than 70 cadets to the hospital.
According to an agreement the State Appeal Board approved Monday, the building s boiler system leaked in November 2018, causing carbon monoxide to seep from the basement. The appeal board agreed to reimburse workers compensation insurers for the cadets medical payments because  it is alleged that lack of maintenance led to the leak, said Lynn Hicks, a spokesman for the Iowa Attorney General s Office.
In total, the state will pay about $31,000 to EMC Insurance and the Iowa Municipalities Workers Compensation Association, which insures city and county employees. The payments cover claims for 21 cadets who were sleeping at the academy at the time of the leak. ....

Another Democrat considers bid for city tax collector

Raise your hand if you knew the Scranton tax collector race next year would attract so many candidates.
A third Democrat emerged this week, one with lots of experience in the city Single Tax Office, which the tax collector runs.
John Opsasnick, 63, said he’s seriously thinking about seeking the job. The salary is $53,300, which the city and the city school district split because the office collects real-estate and other taxes for both. Opsasnick actually worked in the office as an auditor and later tax administrator for 37 years before retiring three years ago. He said
David Wenzel, the tax collector who went on to become mayor, hired him. ....

School boards reorganize for 2021

Incoming school board presidents from districts that serve Lackawanna County share a similar goal in 2021 — get students safely back to their classrooms.

Between Dec. 1 and 9, school boards reorganized for 2021. During the meetings, board members appointed presidents and vice presidents. New presidents include Michael Hallinan, Dunmore, and Joseph Mondak, Valley View, both longtime board members who have served as president before; Kevin Mulhern, Lackawanna Trail; and Robert Notari, Old Forge. Scranton School Board approves tax increase for 2021

City property owners will see their school taxes increase 3.9% next year, under a balanced budget approved by the Scranton School Board on Monday night.
The district eliminated a $4.1 million budget shortfall through several measures, including delaying interest payments on new debt, adjusting projected health care costs and reducing the number of special education aides employed through outside agencies.
Directors passed the $166.5 million budget with an 8-1 vote, with Director Sean McAndrew dissenting.
The district’s financial recovery plan calls for raising taxes to the maximum allowed by the state each year. With a tax increase of 3.9%, or 5.4 mills, the owner of a property assessed at $10,000 would pay an additional $54 next year. A mill is a $1 tax on every $1,000 of assessed property value. The district’s total millage rate will rise to 143 mills. ....
