Homomorphic Encryption Nears Reality, Pushed by IBM, Google

The increasing mobility of data, as it ping-pongs between clouds, data centers and the edge, has made it an easier target of cybercrime groups, which has put a premium on the encryption of that data in recent years.
Cybersecurity vendors have stepped up, developing strong and efficient ways to encrypt data both while it’s at rest and when it’s in transit. However, there is a glaring weakness. When the data is being processed, analyzed or used by applications in another way, it needs to be unencrypted, making it more vulnerable to attack.
To counter this, some major IT vendors are pushing forward with a decades-old encryption idea that was first talked about in the late 1970s but not successfully demonstrated for the first time until 2009. Since then, interest in fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) has increased, largely paralleling the rise of cloud computing. ....

The future of data privacy: confidential computing, quantum safe cryptography take center stage

Confidential computing
IBM has been working on confidential computing for roughly a decade. The concept behind the technology is to permit clients to retain full privacy and control over data and operational workloads through hardware-level security.
This can include the implementation of secure enclaves trusted execution environments which can manage data and are only accessible through authorized programming code, keeping information away not only from cloud or infrastructure providers but also external threat actors.
IBM likens the technology to a hotel room safe, in which keycards are required to access the room, but further authorization is required to open the lock to the safe.  ....

IBM helps businesses prepare for next generation encryption

IBM helps businesses prepare for next generation encryption
IBM Security is launching a new service that allows companies to experiment with fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) an emerging technology that allows data to remain encrypted while being processed or analyzed in cloud or third-party environments.
IBM Security Homomorphic Encryption Services provide companies with education, expert support, and a testing environment to develop prototype applications that can take advantage of FHE.
While current encryption techniques allow data to be protected in storage and in transit, data must be decrypted while it is being processed or analyzed, exposing it to greater security and privacy risks. FHE allows data to remain encrypted even while being processed, closing the gap in conventional encryption models and opening up new avenues for sensitive data to be shared and processed by third parties and in the cloud. ....

IBM launched new support for homomorphic encryption (HE) on Thursday widely seen as the data-protection standard of the future, but one that s been difficult for companies to adopt.
IBM is now offering companies consulting services, a place to prototype online, and IT support around the standard.
The process protects data while it is being analyzed and processed, so employees, vendors, and hackers can t access or steal it.
Gartner, IBM, and others say HE is on the cusp of going mainstream, and companies will need to address the learning curve of using it. ....

IBM (NYSE: IBM) Security launched a new service to provide companies a platform to experiment with fully homomorphic encryption, designed to allow data to remain encrypted while being processed or analyzed in cloud or third party environments.  The IBM Security Homomorphic Encryption Services provide companies with education, support and a testing environment for clients to develop prototype applications that can utilize the FHE.
As the hybrid cloud grows, sensitive data will be more broadly stored, analyzed and shared across platforms and parties, exposing it to numerous security controls and risks.  Encryption techniques allow data to be protected during storage and in transit the data must be decrypted while being processed or analyzed.  This creates a window of opportunity where data is more vulnerable to theft or exposure.  ....
