The Day - Old Lyme selectmen still won't consider racism resolution - News from southeastern Connecticut

As the reporter for East Lyme, Old Lyme and Lyme, I cover the routine and the extraordinary aspects of small-town Connecticut life with the same level of care and attention to detail. This commitment is guided by the belief that the local level is where an informed citizenry can have the biggest impact. I enjoy telling the stories that make this area unique and asking the questions you need answered.

The Day - Containing multitudes: Minister, social justice activist, Marx scholar shakes things up in Old Lyme

Old Lyme  The Rev. Steven R. Jungkeit, senior minister at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, has helped turn the historic house of worship into a home for social justice.
The church itself provided physical sanctuary to a Pakistani couple facing deportation for 212 days in 2018. The year before, the congregation purchased a home in Old Lyme to welcome refugees in perpetuity, Jungkeit said. Guests have included refugees from Syria and Congo, as well as climate refugees from Puerto Rico in the months following Hurricane Maria. Members of the church community have also helped many more refugees find housing, jobs and, ultimately, the official go-ahead to remain in the United States. ....

First Selectman Timothy Griswold said he believes the resolution declaring racism a public health crisis is written in a way that implies Old Lyme is inherently racist.Josh LaBella / Hearst Connecticut Media
OLD LYME Almost a year has passed since the death of George Floyd unleashed a new wave of racial unrest on the nation and, with more recent police shootings, the conversation about racial equity has continued in all levels of society.
In Old Lyme, though, there is some reticence to have that conversation as a town government. Since August, Selectwoman Mary Jo Nosal, a Democrat, has been trying to put a resolution on the Board of Selectmen’s agenda that would declare racism a public health crisis. ....

The Day - Old Lyme's 'character' includes complicity in formation of structural racism - News from southeastern Connecticut

Rev. Steven R. Jungkeit
As the death of George Floyd, and now Daunte Wright, once again dominate the news cycle, so too local communities throughout the United States are called to continue the work of addressing the inequities and injustices caused by systemic racism.
Thankfully, in many places, that work didn’t begin with the death of Mr. Floyd it has been happening all along. Still, the horrific footage of that event, together with the killing of Daunte Wright, underscore both the urgency of the work, and the sheer scale of it. The roots of systemic racism run deep, and they are pervasive. Those roots run deep throughout the entire country, but they are especially pervasive in local communities. ....
