4 presidential bets unite vs. possible election sabotage

During a joint press conference at The Peninsula Manila Hotel in Makati City, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Damagoso, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, and former National Security adviser Norberto Gonzales said they are worried that there will be massive cheating in the coming polls. A fourth presidential hopeful, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, was among the signatories but did not make it to the event while vice presidential candidates Dr. Willie Ong and Senate President Vicente Sotto III joined their running mates. "'Yan naman po talaga ang ginagawa nung mga nakaraang eleksyon eh. Parang inihahanda na po 'yung sambayanan natin para di kwestyunin kung ano ang resulta kahit na may daya. Eh palagay ko po naman panahon na para huwag na nating pahintulutan 'yan (It has been done in the previous elections. They precondition our people not to question the results even if there was a fraud. I think, it is time that we will not let that happen again)," Gonzales said. Presidential candidate Sen. Panfilo Lacson (left) and running mate, Senate President Vicente Sotto III (PNA photo by Lloyd Caliwan) Lacson echoed that they will stand as one. "'Yan ang essence ng paglabas namin ngayong umaga. At warning na rin na huwag kayo mag-subvert ng will of the electorate kasi we'll stand up as one (That is the essence of our press conference and a warning against those planning to subvert the will of the electorate because we'll stand up as one)," he said. Senate President Vicente Sotto III said he "fully supports" the stand of Domagoso, Gonzales, and his running mate, Lacson. Lacson confirmed they have received intelligence reports of elections sabotage but are still validating them. "Hindi naman puwedeng agad-agad i-share sa public kung hindi validated. We're very careful along this line. We're still working on it to validate, but there are numerous reports actually pointing to this subversion or subverting the will of the people (We cannot share it immediately with the public because it is still invalidated. We're very careful along this line. We're still working on it to validate, but there are numerous reports actually pointing to this subversion or subverting the will of the people)," he said. Lacson added that if there will be an attempt to destabilize election day, they will stand up as one. "Hindi naman kami naghahamon ng rebolusyon pero gagawin namin ang magagawa namin following the rule of law, of course para pigilan kung hindi man talaga labanan (We are not daring to start a revolution but we will do what we can following the rule of law, of course to stop it)," he said. Exit polls inaccurate gauge of actual election results: Comelec

Presidential candidates (from left) Ernesto Abella, Leody de Guzman, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, Norberto Gonzales, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Faisal Mangondato, Dr. Jose Montemayor Jr., Sen. Manny Pacquiao, and Vice President Leni Robredo. Commissioner George Garcia in a press conference that votes will be counted only on May 9. "Once the votes are counted, that is the best exit poll," he said. "Let us remember that, in the same manner as surveys, the exit polls are not very accurate." Garcia, however, said such activities are not banned under election laws. Exit polls is a survey of voters taken immediately after they have voted at polling precincts. "The issue on exit polls has been decided already by the Supreme Court. Therefore, we cannot easily regulate this," he said. In a 2000 decision, the Supreme Court said "holding of exit polls and the dissemination of their results through mass media constitute an essential part of the freedoms of speech and of the press. Hence, the Comelec cannot ban them totally in the guise of promoting clean, honest, orderly and credible elections". Once exit polls undermine the results of the polls, that would be another matter, Garcia said. "We will respect the exit polls. But anytime that it undermines the integrity of the process, we would include that in our investigation," he said. Gun ban Meanwhile, 2,470 people have been arrested as of Sunday for violating the election gun ban, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said. The PNP said 2,403 of those nabbed were civilians, 41 security guards, 15 police officers, and 11 military personnel. A total of 2,366 police operations gathered 1,900 firearms, 10,558 pieces of ammunition, and 896 deadly weapons. The top five regions in terms of the number of arrested violators are the National Capital Region with 857, followed by Central Visayas (279), Calabarzon (255), Central Luzon (193), and Western Visayas (146).
