A presidential promise to rebuild the nation’s roads curdled into a running joke a few years ago when the Trump White House’s self-proclaimed “Infrastructure Week” crumbled under the weight of scandal and futility.
On Wednesday, President Biden unveiled his own plan to spend more than $2 trillion over eight years on public works — matching a price tag once floated by his predecessor — ushering in a sort of Infrastructure Decade. And it’s no joke.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy took a break from reading Dr. Seuss to visit the U.S.-Mexico border Monday, but he was still speaking in the simplistic terms of children’s literature. During an appearance with other lawmakers in El Paso, McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, attempted to brand the latest surge of migrants the “Biden border crisis.”
McCarthy was right in one respect: The border is President Biden’s problem now. His administration is struggling to handle the influx of migrants arriving there, particularly the children among them, as competently and humanely as it should. But the idea that Biden created or even exacerbated the problem is as fictitious as “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Voters had to wait two to three hours at this Atlanta polling place in June 2020.John Spink / Atlanta Journal-Constitution / TNS
In a U.S. Supreme Court hearing last week, a lawyer for the Democratic National Committee observed that “more voting restrictions have been enacted over the last decade than at any point since the end of Jim Crow,” a reference to the laws in the late 19th and early 20th century designed to enforce racial segregation.
“The last three months have seen an even greater uptick in proposed voting restrictions, many aimed squarely at the minority groups whose participation Congress intended to protect,” said Democratic attorney Bruce Spiva, arguing to overturn two Arizona laws that invalidated ballots cast in the wrong precinct and prohibited the collection of early ballots for delivery to polling places.

After a year of federal excavation of the City Hall swamp, San Francisco officials face the formidable task of persuading the public that local government will not continue to be greased by gifts of overseas vacations and expensive jewelry. City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s exclusion of suspect contractors from future business begins to contend with that challenge.

President Biden must hold Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally accountable for approving the 2018 assassination of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Anything less that direct, severe sanctions against the crown prince would send the message to other tyrants around the world that they can jail or even kill dissidents and journalists without real fear of retribution from the new U.S. administration.
A new U.S. intelligence report on the killing and dismemberment of Khashoggi has posed an immediate test to Biden’s previous statements of deep concern about human rights abuses and political repression in Saudi Arabia. The report, released Friday, spelled out in plain terms what had been suspected from the start: The crown prince personally approved the operation by his henchmen to kill Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
