Carthage College receives $150,000 grant for Urban Teacher Preparation Program

KENOSHA — Carthage College has received a $150,000 grant from the William & Sheila Konar Foundation to grow its Urban Teacher Prep Program (UTPP), a program designed to expand the pool of educators who are equipped and committed to teaching in urban elementary schools.
The program aims to identify, instruct, inspire and increase the number of teachers committed to teaching in high-need, urban school settings.
“The Urban Teacher Preparation Program provides teacher candidates with authentic experiences in urban schools and classroom settings,” said Michele Hancock, program director. “This allows them to develop meaningful relationships with mentor teachers and the school community over an extended period of time, thereby fostering confidence in our teacher candidates that they can and will become effective urban educators.”

Child Poverty: Rochester, a City in Crisis | The Susan B. Anthony Center

Tuesday, February 16, 2021
Zoom Webinar
Child poverty is a serious problem in Rochester, with approximately 50% of children in living below the poverty line. Current research points to poverty itself as the cause of negative outcomes for poor children, not associated problems such as poor nutrition, low levels of parental education, poor schools, or crime-ridden neighborhoods. Systemic racism in the form of wage, education, and housing inequities contributes directly to poverty and a direct assault on systemic racism needs to redress poverty as well as the causes of poverty. Join the University of Rochester Susan B. Anthony Center for a panel discussion on poverty as the cause of debilitating outcomes in cognition, emotional stability, and health for poor children. Directly addressing poverty through interventions such as an unconditional cash allowance or direct money transfers for poor households can promote positive changes in parenting, home environment, and maternal depression, as well as children’s cognitive ability, engagement in school, and behavior and anxiety.
