From the unsettling conclusion of Biden’s Not-the-State-of-the-Union Speech: “We’ve *stared into the abyss* of insurrection and autocracy, pandemic and pain.” Nietzsche’s parable on ressentiment is being paraphrased here: “He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee” ( Beyond Good and Evil, #146). So who are the real monsters now?
