Department Of Music At UCC Receives Largest Gift In It's 113 Year History
The estate of British Master Builder Sidney V. Regan has given €2 million to the department.
He moved to Cork in the 1960s and was member of the Commodore Male Voice Choir in Cobh. 
The bequest will enable the Department to provide direct support to students and improve physical resourcing for performers, composers and academics.
The COPE Foundation, Marymount Hospice, the Cork Deaf Association and the National Council for the Blind will also share a separate €200,000.

British Builder Leaves €2million In Will To Irish Musicians


The next generation of Irish musicians is to benefit from a €2million pot left to them by a British builder who quit his home and resettled in Ireland after falling in love with trad music.
The estate of Sidney V. Regan left €2million to the Department of Music at University College Cork (UCC), allowing generations of musical talent from Seán Ó Riada to Ann Cleare, and future cohorts of musicians, to benefit from.
The bequest will enable the department to direct support to students in the form of scholarships for undergraduates and postgraduates, improve physical resourcing for performers and composers and hire professional performers.

Sidney V Regan, who died in 2017, bequeathed almost all of his estate to the university.
A British Master builder, Mr Regan moved with his wife Hilda to Cork in the 1960s and became very involved in the local music scene.
A member of the Commodore Male Voice Choir in Cobh, he was also a member of the Cobh Gramophone Society.
The couple were close friends of the late composer Aloys Fleischmann, who was also Professor of Music at UCC, and Mr Regan bequeathed the gift "to his friend's beloved music department".

UCC music department welcomes record bequest of €2m


 
Generations of musical talent from Seán Ó Riada to Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin have learned their craft at University College Cork (UCC) and now future musicians will benefit as the music department has been awarded its largest ever gift.
The estate of British master builder Sidney V Regan has bequeathed €2 million to the department, helping to equip the university’s new sound studio which will be officially opened on Tuesday.
Prof John O’Halloran, interim president of UCC, welcomed the donation and said the university was hugely grateful to the estate of Mr Regan for the bequest to further support music at UCC.
