During an interview with  Collider in 2018, Heyman confirmed that the upcoming project would be a prequel, set before the events of Roald Dahl's popular children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the two movie adaptions. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder in his most iconic role. No direct feature adaptation has been made of  Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator (though elements of it were used in both films), and Dahl was developing a third Wonka book titled C harlie in the White House before he passed away in 1990.

A Willy Wonka prequel movie will arrive in theaters in 2023, with Paddington and Paddington 2 director Paul King at the helm.

The project is being overseen by David Heyman, executive producer of the Harry Potter and Paddington films.
