(KCAW/Berett Wilber) After several years of litigation, the case between the Sitka Tribe of Alaska and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and Board of Fisheries has been resolved and will not go to trial this summer. Sitka Tribe filed suit against ADF&G in 2018, over the department’s management of the Sitka Sound Sac Roe Herring Fishery. On Monday (4-26-21), Juneau Judge Daniel Schally signed the order vacating the trial, originally scheduled for June 1. ....

Earlier this year, legal representatives for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska argued in court that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game had not upheld its constitutional duty in its management of the Sitka Sound Sac Roe Herring Fishery, when it did not provide the “best available information” to the Board of Fish during the 2017-2018 meeting. But the legal case between Sitka Tribe of Alaska and the state continues, with a Juneau Superior Court judge recently denying Sitka Tribe’s motion for summary judgement on constitutional grounds. ....
Commercial fishery hauls slow down as major spawning begins in Sitka Sound Posted by Katherine Rose | Apr 7, 2021 The Sitka Sound Sac Roe Herring fishery remained open for the 11th day in a row Tuesday (4-6-21) Seiners hauled in around 900 tons of herring during Monday’s opening, according to a press release from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Estimates are not yet available for today’s/Tuesday’s opener. To date, the commercial fleet has harvested around 14,700-tons of herring, cumulatively. State biologists observed around 20.0 nautical miles of spawn during an aerial survey Tuesday morning. The majority of the spawn was concentrated along the Kruzof Island shoreline from Lava Island to Rob Point. Spawn was also observed near the Magoun Islands, from Point Brown to Kresta Point, Promisla and Eastern Bays, as well as Whiting Harbor, near Indian River, and Pirates Cove. ....
