Touching the Void: High altitude thrills come to Oxford Playhouse

A HAIR-RAISING tale of tragedy and survival in the mountains is being staged by the Oxford Playhouse, bringing high altitude thrills to audiences safely at home.
Touching The Void live is a dramatic staging of Joe Simpson’s best-selling book – and subsequent BAFTA-winning film – which recounts an ill-fated climbing expedition to the Peruvian Andes.
The livestream will bring in much-needed funds to the Beaumont Street theatre which has been practically closed to live audiences for over a year.
It tells the true story of Simpson’s exploits with climbing partner Simon Yates during their perilous descent of Siula Grande and a dramatic struggle for survival after a fall into a crevasse. It follows the dilemma of how far we should go to save a life even if it threatens our own survival.

There’s something fitting about a virtual guide to Peru. For would-be conquistadores, it was a land of fantasy and imagination. The very name of the country would have conjured up illusions of untold treasures, Inca emperors, wild beasts and heathen practices. Lima was the seat of Spain’s South American imperial territories for 300 years; it was where you had to be if you wanted to acquire booty, land, or influence. But it was traversed by impassable mountains and treacherous rivers, fringed by dark jungles in the east and uncharted seas to the west.

At the start of this year, the stage designer Ti Green was working on a production about a 19th-century physician who advocated the life-saving benefits of hand washing. Doctor Semmelweis, starring Mark Rylance, had a story with uncanny resonance but like the other projects Green had planned for 2020, it was put on hold. “I was working on four shows, all of which haven’t opened,” she says. “I had a year’s work go up in smoke overnight.”
Green’s sets and costumes have been seen at theatres including the Globe and the National Theatre, and in the West End and on Broadway (where she picked up two Tony award nominations for her design for Coram Boy). Her relationship with Bristol Old Vic stretches back to the start of her career more than 20 years ago and includes her jaw-dropping set for the mountaineering drama Touching the Void in 2018. Instead of a predictable snowscape or climbing wall, Green used a huge, three-dimensional kinetic structure made of welded metal to represent Siula Grande mountain in the production. “It is an auditorium like no other,” she says of Bristol Old Vic. “The walls are humming with the feeling and festivities of 250 years of theatregoing.”
