Kelvin Sim, former country lead at Waze Malaysia, has joined Redbeat Academy as commercial director. Redbeat Academy, a collaboration between AirAsia Digital and Waze s parent firm Google, was initially set up to upskill and cross-train AirAsia employees on AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, big data, and software engineering. It officially opened its doors to the public last October.
The academy focuses on five segments: AirAsia Allstars, corporate and SMEs, government agencies, universities, and public individuals. It offers solutions in three main areas: Skills Development Programme; Betabuild Labs, a programme offered by AirAsia supported Google to help enterprises incubate new digital businesses with employees; and career coaching and hiring service. ....

When the Bangladesh Government decided to shut down all its educational and training institutions back in March 2020, many students wanted to venture into the online space for education, which seemed like a plausible way forward. I recently visited rural areas of Bangladesh amid the Covid-19 pandemic and returned to Dhaka with a new understanding of the impact that Covid-19 is having on child marriage, a harmful practice that is a global challenge. The fundamental shift that I saw was that child marriage, which has typically been encouraged by struggling parents, is now being encouraged by struggling girls. This worrisome trend underscores a new burden of the pandemic on the poor. ....
