Airline Crews Battle Rattlesnakes Squatting in Grounded Fleet of Planes

Airline Crews Battle Rattlesnakes Squatting in Grounded Fleet of Planes
On 6/3/21 at 12:24 PM EDT
The long-term storage of Qantas planes in California's Mojave Desert is creating new, unexpected hazards for engineers to tackle: rattlesnakes and scorpions have infiltrated the fleet, making their home in wheels and tires.
According to a Thursday update in the Qantas News Room, protecting aircraft from invading critters like birds and insects is nothing new for engineers. But the burgeoning rattlesnake season in California has created a unique problem, forcing engineers to add "a new pre-inspection procedure" to their typical maintenance routines.
The fleet, which is in "deep storage" until air travel returns to its pre-pandemic levels, is being stored in Victorville, Calif., in the Mojave Desert, because of the area's high heat and low humidity. Unfortunately, these conditions are also conducive to desert pests like rattlesnakes and scorpions.

Of all the pests that can plague one's home, snakes, with their silent, slithering presence, might be the worst. One Georgia family is learning this lesson the hard way, ever since realizing that several snakes had made their home in the ceiling of their rental house.
According to WTVC Chattanooga, Hary Pugliese, his wife Susan, and their teenage daughter moved into the LaFayette, Georgia, house in January. The ceiling serpents, which were discovered Monday, have only served to fuel the long-standing tensions between the Puglieses and their landlord, John Stafford.

Dam Removal Rejection Pt 2 - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

Dam Removal Rejection Pt 2
Tuesday May 18th, 2021
I’m Bob Larson. The proposed removal of four dams on the lower Snake River is a bad idea. At least, as far as U.S.
Representative Dan Newhouse is concerned. He says while Idaho Republican Mike Simpson, who proposed the removal, is a valued colleague, this is just not the answer for saving salmon …
NEWHOUSE … “I agree with the concern that this jeopardizes not only the agricultural industry in the Pacific Northwest, but so many other things that have been made possible because many of the benefits the dams provide, not the least of which is clean, carbon free, renewable hydroelectric energy.”

Snake sightings could increase after rainy weather in San Antonio-area

Snake sightings could increase after rainy weather in San Antonio-area
How to tell if snake is venomous
Updated:
Tags:
SAN ANTONIO – Heavy rains in the San Antonio-area overnight could cause a spike in snake sightings.
Snakes, historically, like to come out after rainstorms. “The rain is known to bring the snakes out since they will be chasing after frogs,” and other prey, according to Snake-Removal.com.
Snakes also seek higher ground and shelter from the rain, which means they could show up in your house or neighborhood.
What can you do? Keep storage areas, such as your garage or shed, as clean and tidy as possible. Snakes can fit through tiny openings and easily hide in shadowy areas which means wood and brush piles should be kept as far away from your residence as possible.

Snake sightings common as the weather warms

RALEIGH – The warm weather means more snakes will start to show up along trails, in the woods, crossing roads and in our yards. Wildlife diversity biologists at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission request that if you see a snake, do not be alarmed, do not kill it, give it plenty of room, and if you see a pine snake or rattlesnake, report it.
About 70% of snake bites occur when people try to kill or handle them. Some may become aggressive if agitated by a human or animal, but most will leave people alone if they aren’t bothered and are provided an escape route. Watching for snakes and giving them a wide berth is an effective habit for preventing snake bites.

Hollifield: The springtime episode of Nature Run Amuck

Spring has sprung, according to the old cliché used by every unimaginative writer who ever penned a story that referenced spring.

THE CANDLE: Venom can vary in snakes of the same species

Last week, I covered a research paper investigating the origins of venom. The research team dug deep into the genomes of various venomous species and discovered the core metavenom network that lies at the heart of all reptiles and mammals that produce oral venom. Oral venoms are collections of proteins produced in the salivary glands of reptiles and mammals.
All reptiles and mammals might share the basic architecture to evolve a venom under the right conditions. Still, no group has taken that pathway more than snakes. The types of proteins in their venom and the delivery mechanism snakes use have been heavily modified by nature.

How to Pick a Houseplant That Will Survive in Your Kitchen

How to Pick a Houseplant That Will Survive in Your Kitchen
Photo: sirtravelalot (Shutterstock)
If your living spaces are already full of plants, you may be looking at adding some greenery to other rooms in your home—including the kitchen. And, like any other room in your home, your kitchen has its own microclimate, thanks to the amount of sunlight it gets, the access to fresh air, humidity levels, and the temperature.
So while it’s not possible to find one single plant that’s perfect for
every kitchen, some species are better suited for the room than others. In this article from The Spruce, houseplant expert Cori Sears suggests some plants that might make a nice addition to your kitchen (and also have a decent chance of surviving). Here are some of the options.

Hollifield: Where Ramona the Pest meets Gus the Ranger

In the afterlife of art and literature, in the sweet by and by, I imagine retired Texas Ranger Gus McRae on the porch of the celestial ranch house teasing Ramona the Pest and whistling for that old dog Ribsy to run the pigs out of the yard.
Two literary giants, Beverly Cleary and Larry McMurtry, died on the same day, March 25, 2021.
Cleary was 104. During her career, she sold more than 90 million copies of her books, most of which chronicled the adventures of Ramona (the Pest) Quimby, her big sister Beezus, Henry Huggins and his dog, Ribsy.
McMurtry was 84. The Pulitzer Prize-winner penned dozens of books, including “The Last Picture Show,” “Terms of Endearment,” and the greatest western adventure ever written, “Lonesome Dove.”

Python Swallows Pet Cat Whole in Horrifying Incident
On 4/5/21 at 4:57 PM EDT
A housecat named Hurjun met a horrific end on April 4 when he was apparently suffocated and swallowed whole by a python in the comfort of his Thailand home, according to Mothership. Photographs of the scene posted to Facebook show the snake digesting its meal, its diamond-patterned belly noticeably distended.
In the same post, Hurjun's owner, Kanchi Nard, recounted the tragic series of events, which took place around 3 p.m. local time. She wrote that her daughter had wandered into the backyard in search of Hurjun only to stumble upon an enormous python instead. Her cries of alarm brought Nard herself running. Seeing the conspicuous bulge in the snake's belly, Nard realized Hurjun was "already in his stomach," according to Facebook's translation feature.

Hollifield: Clarifying a controversial Potato Head stance

And now, for a Potato Head update.
Last week, I attempted to poke a little fun at those outraged by toymaker Hasbro’s announcement that it would rebrand Mr. Potato Head as simply Potato Head in an effort to be more gender neutral. I suggested that getting one’s knickers in a knot over something as inconsequential as a company rebrand of one of the most boring toys of my generation was distracting us from actual problems like deadly viruses, attempted insurrections and the seasonal increase in beer prices.
Judging from the reaction to the column, I underestimated either the public’s reverence for this particular classic toy or the importance of potato gender and courtesy titles.
