left in the last 24 hours. when they ship them off, more come on. i understand the gates are mostly closed there. also that through no fault of those officials processing, because of the chaos, families do get separated and often sent to other countries. separate countries. it must be tragic and terrifying for them. so i think, a distressing situation on that base. adding to this as well, i'm also learning from a source close to the situation that there are growing concerns and anger about possibly hundreds of afghans that were employed by the u.s. embassy. now, remember when the u.s. embassy evacuated, there was a pretty symbolic series of helicopters varying the u.s. nationals out. left behind, sadly, were local afghans who are part of the very many in the capital city who cannot get to the airport. they are not being told to get to the airport as well.

efforts. a source telling cnn the number of people waiting to board evacuation flights from kabul's airport has swelled to 20,000 people on top of that, there's another 2000 waiting just outside the airport gates. the airport is desperate to get in, 8,000 people have been evacuated in the last 24 hours. and president biden is set to address the nation in about 45 minutes about the crisis. we'll bring it to you live when it happens. in the meantime, let's check in with sam kylie at the airport in kabul and joins me by phone. sam, we learned yesterday the u.s. is looking for alternate routes to the airport because of threats from isis. what have you been seeing and hearing on the ground today, and are they moving people under the cover of darkness as we speak at this hour? >> well, i can certainly say that there has been a very substantial increase clearly in

trying to evacuate americans and afghans from this country and as quickly, obviously, and as safely as possible, which is really part of the problem and the real immediate wording there, boris, safely. >> yeah. let's get the latest on the evacuation effort. it has been a difficult one. cnn international security editor nick paton walsh joins us now live from doha in qatar where many evacuation flights have been landing. nick, the number of people evacuating has gone up. it's now more than 18,000, right? >> a situation that is beyond the logistics even the united states military may be able to deploy. 18,500 people trying to get off the base as of this morning according to a source familiar with the airport. they believe also, too, 2,000 people at each of the maybe two, three gates around that airport.

the kabul airport to try and get out? >> reporter: yeah, i mean, the situation is worse than it was when we talked yesterday, if you can imagine that. yesterday we were talking about 14,000 people on the airport. a source familiar with the situation now tells me there are 18,500 on that airport. my appalling maths would suggest that's about 40 planeloads, depending how tightly you pack them. at that rate, we're talking probably at the current rate of plane departures, a good day, two, three, four days of plane flights to get them out. on top of that, my source says there are 2,000 people at each of the two, three gates still trying to get on. we're probably talking in the region of 25,000 people who still are on or near the airport who need to get taken out. obviously there's capacity issue down the runway too, where they get off, where they land, where they go. another interesting element this

vaccine and a source tells cnn that full approval of the pfizer covid vaccine by the fda could come as soon as monday. meantime, thousands of unmasked protesters clashing with police in australia. the country just reported the worst single day jump in covid cases they have ever seen. but new restrictions to control the outbreak are being met with violence resistance. thousands of demonstrators are openly defying lockdown orders in multiple cities. cnn's angus watson is in sydney where dozens of protesters were arrested earlier today. anger us, walk us through what's happening right now. >> reporter: amara, scenes of violence in australia not seen for quite some time on saturday in australia's largest city of melbourne. 4,000 protester turning out in the center of the city, bent on violence, the police say. they came there to cause mayhem.

source told me about as well. there are many reasons how people manage to get on the base. there was a moment the filtration system basically collapsed and humanitarian issues were allowed on people who didn't have the correct paperwork, seemed to have been allowed on the base. also, i'm told by the source, one key factor was the decision by the united states to issue some siv applicants, that's their special immigrant visa program, to issue this particular image, you'll see it here, essentially a nameless, numberless visa of sorts when which says, you can come on the base. it's done on the visa note paper, we're familiar with it. if you have a u.s. visa in your passport, that's what it looks like. this was essentially screen shot and handed around -- i've got one -- to anybody who could possibly obtain it. that means many, many, people are on the base now who do not have the appropriate paperwork. that is a staggering thing to hear. it's not entirely surprising, given how i obtained one, anybody who was on any group,

received at least one dose of the pfizer vaccine back in january. meanwhile, for the third day the cdc says more than a million americans received a covid vaccine. we could possibly be a day away as well from the fda fully approving the pfizer vaccine. a source tells cnn full approval can happen as soon as tomorrow. nadya romero is live in miami and she is talking about covid. nadya, what is the latest that you are hearing? and good morning. >> reporter: good morning, christi and boris. i sat down with pharmacists and an emergency room doctor here in florida and both of them said, listen, getting fda approval would only help to strengthen our argument as we're trying to convince people to take the vaccine. but as we know, if you are 12 and younger, you are not eligible to take the vaccine. so there is a lot of concern across this state where we are seeing spikes in covid cases about kids going back to school and there is an ongoing debate

the vultures' numbers have fallen so low that extinction remains a very real possibility. ensuring their survival has led to some unique interventions. the vulture population today in cambodia is only sustained by feeding on dead domestic ungulates, domestic cattle and domestic buffalo, so supplementary feeding not only provides a source of regular food for vultures, but it also enables us to monitor vulture populations. so the rangers have carefully set the table. there's over 250 kilograms of fresh beef on the menu. the only question now is just who's coming for dinner? and it doesn't take long before the weekly vulture restaurant is under way. another innovation involves erecting artificial nests that are then hoisted 30 metres into selected treetops. the aim is to attract these vultures to nest close to the vulture restaurant where there's the safe place and the safe food for them.
