The Spirit Lake School Board discussed options for decommissioning one of the two wind turbines on the school's property.
Spirit Lake's Director of District Operations David Dau said the smaller of the two turbines a Wind World 250 was built 31 years ago, and he said that model has an average lifespan of about 25 years.
"It has been significant in saving us money," Beck said. "I think the people that did this when they did it were really smart. It's paid for itself."
Every current member of the Spirit Lake School Board who filed candidacy papers to continue serving was supported at the polls this week, and candidate Mieka Stecker was voted to be the newest face on the board.
All five seats on the school board appeared on the ballot this cycle. A trio of full, four-year terms were set to appear on the 2023 ballot, and a pair of two-year terms were added following board resignations earlier this year.
Candidates in the race for Spirit Lake School Board were invited to two separate forums last week neither was able to boast a full bench of board candidates, but both drew dozens upon dozens of community members interested in hearing from those in the race.
The Spirit Lake School Board and administration have deserved criticism for not being inclusive of the community as they have decided several very divisive issues without community input.
