BENGALURU: For the first time in over five decades of India’s space programme, Isro opened up its facilities to the private sector with two satellites from companies and one from academia being tested in the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) here.
Over the next few months, two private firms will test their engines at Sriharikota spaceport and Thiruvananthapuram rocket centre. Isro will soon give its satellite images to a private firm that offers mapping services.
Sources in URSC said satellites from Tamil Nadu-based Space Kidz India and Bengaluru-based Syzygy Space Technologies have undergone testing.
Isro chairman K Sivan told TOI: “In both cases, we found problems with solar panels and our team is helping them fix them. URSC also tested UNITYsat, which had problems with the separation system which we’re setting right.”

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has decided to open up its ‘space’ to the private sector after being a closed government organisation for over 50 years. The first move came when ISRO allowed two satellites developed by private companies to be tested at the UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) here.
Satellites from Tamil Nadu-based Space Kidz India and Bengaluru-based Syzygy Space Technologies have undergone testing at URSC, the media quoted sources in URSC. “In both cases, we found problems with solar panels and our team is helping them fix them. The Indian Space Research Organisation is all set to launch its first mission of the year 2021, and has chosen to launch its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C51 (PSLV-C51). The rocket will be launching from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota at 10.23 am IST on 28 February. However, the launch is subject to suitable weather conditions at the launchpad. ISRO will be launching a Brazilian satellite along with 20 other Indian satellites. This mission was among those mentioned in the 2021 Union Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

NEW DELHI: In its first mission of 2021, the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch Brazilian satellite Amazonia-1 as main payload and 20 other satellites from Sriharikota at 10.23 am on February 28. The launch of PSLV-C51 is the first dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), a PSU under the Department of Space.
The 20 co-passenger satellites include one nano satellite (INS-2TD) from Isro, four commercial satellites booked via recently-formed space facilitator Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and 15 satellites commercially arranged by NSIL itself.
The four satellites being launched via IN-SPACe are three UNITYsats from a consortium of three Indian academic institutes and one Satish Dhawan satellite from startup Space Kidz India. Space Kidz India said Satish Dhawan satellite, named after former Isro chairman Satish Dhawan, is aimed at studying space radiation and magnetosphere. This will be their second satellite after Kalamsat to be launched by Isro.

In its first space mission in 2021, India’s space agency ISRO planned to launch Brazilian satellite Amazonia-1 and 20 other payloads, including one built by a home-grown start-up, on February 28.
The launch from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota, is tentatively scheduled at 10.23 am, subject to weather conditions, Bengaluru-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation said on Friday.
PSLV-C51/Amazonia-1 is the first dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a Government of India company under Department of Space.
NSIL is undertaking this mission under a commercial arrangement with Spaceflight Inc.USA.
Amazonia-1 is the optical earth observation satellite of National Institute for Space Research (INPE).
