Patriots star Edelman offers to meet with NBA player who used anti-Semitic slur

New England Patriots star Julian Edelman has extended an invitation to meet with an NBA player who recently used an anti-Semitic slur during a video game livestream.Edelman, who is Jewish, offered to join Miami Heat center Meyers Leonard for a Shabbat dinner in Miami through an open letter that was shared on the Patriots wide receiver's Twitter account Wednesday morning.Leonard can be heard using the slur in a video that surfaced Tuesday on social media. He has since apologized through an Instagram post, but the Heat says the 29-year-old will be away from the team indefinitely as the NBA conducts an investigation.In his open letter, the 34-year-old Edelman expressed a desire to meet Leonard for the first time "one day soon" and to offer perspective to the situation instead of more criticism."I get the sense that you didn't use that word out of hate, more out of ignorance. Most likely, you weren't trying to hurt anyone or even profile Jews in your comment. That's what makes it so destructive," Edelman wrote, in part. "When someone intends to be hateful, it's usually met with great resistance. Casual ignorance is harder to combat and has greater reach, especially when you command great influence. Hate is like a virus. Even accidentally, it can rapidly spread."Edelman concluded his letter by saying he is in Miami fairly often and that he hopes to do a Shabbat dinner with Leonard and some friends."I'll show you a fun time," Edelman wrote.Last year, Edelman publicly invited then-Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson to visit the U.S. Holocaust Museum and "have a conversation" about anti-Semitic comments Jackson had made on social media.Edelman later told reporters that he had "a healthy conversation" with Jackson about the comments.
