Already a hub for growing fruits and vegetables, Starlight Elementary School's Life Lab has had a little more life in it in the past few weeks.

From the start, 2023 was definitely a wetter year than usual in Santa Cruz County. On New Year's Day, Watsonville was inundated with flooding near Corralitos Creek, and atmospheric rivers throughout the region hit Santa Cruz and Capitola hard, prompting a visit by President Joe Biden.

Thursday at Starlight Elementary School was brought to kindergarteners by the letter "B," as in berries and books.

The Watsonville City Council and Planning Commission are both separate governing bodies, but as both deal with land-use matters, they will be joining forces Tuesday to discuss one of the biggest land-use matters: how to allocate and construct 2,053 housing units over the next eight years.

Elementary, junior high and high school students on Wednesday will showcase a host of simple and complex projects -- from firefighting drones to mummified sausages -- as part of a two-day Riverside County Science & Engineering Fair.
