150 years ago: Double tragedies on the River Tees

Barnard Castle, c. 1920 and the frozen River Tees
From the Darlington & Stockton Times of February 11, 1871
ON the previous Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm, reported the D&S Times 150 years ago, Joshua and Thomas Hodgson, aged 11 and 13, had left their home in “Lendrig’s Mill”, half-a-mile south of Barnard Castle, to attend Sunday School in the town.
This is probably a misprint, as Lendings Mill was a little to the south of Barney and today, a large static caravan park in Startforth occupies its site.
The boys decided, said the D&S, to take a short cut over the ice to the Desmesnes on the north bank of the river. As they reached the far bank, the ice gave way. ....

Jennie joins group to iron out A66 issues

10 Feb 2021
ROAD CAMPAIGNER: Jennie White
A RESIDENT who highlighted how the A66 dualling project could lead to traffic problems in Startforth has agreed to join a new group which aims to address future concerns associated with the scheme.
Jennie White accepted Startforth Parish Council s invitation to join a local community liaison group which is being set up by Highways England, the agency responsible for the A66 project.
Late last year, Ms White voiced concerns that changes to the layout and junctions of the A66 could lead to a large increase in traffic travelling through the village on the narrow B6277, posing a risk to pedestrians and adding to congestion at the County Bridge traffic lights. ....

Lower levels of violence but drugs remain a concern at Deerbolt YOI

REPORT: Deerbolt YOI
COVID-19 restrictions have led to a reduction in violence at Deerbolt Prison, but they have also ended all rehabilitation and education efforts, a report has revealed.
The Startforth jail’s independent monitoring board (IMB) highlighted a host of concerns including fake solicitors’ letters infused with drugs being sent to prisoners, some facilities and equipment in dire need of repair and education staff being removed from the site during the pandemic.
However, it praised a change in senior staff which brought “new energy, enthusiasm and insights that have noticeably improved the performance of the prison”.
Board chairman John Stoney said 2020 got off to a bad start with a serious incident in January. ....
