Just two months after filing to run for Staten Island and southern Brooklyn’s conservative-leaning congressional seat in 2022, political newcomer Brittany Ramos DeBarros raised nearly $129,000 from more than 1,000 donors, she told City & State.

A Staten Island race mired in conflict suggests that the civility expected to accompany the new ranked choice voting system is already giving way to old-school, hardball New York politics.
In theory, the system, in which voters rank up to five candidates in order of preference, takes away the motivation for negative campaigning so hopefuls can appeal to as many citizens as possible.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Radhakrishna Mohan immigrated to America in 1989, built a career in computer science while serving as a labor leader, and thinks he’s the right choice to be the next Staten Island Borough President.
In an interview with the Advance/SILive.com, Mohan, who ran for Congress in 2018 and lost to former Rep. Max Rose in the Democratic primary, said his experience as a labor leader and time working with community organizations give him the experience for the job. ....

Two of the city’s mayoral candidates, Shaun Donovan and Kathryn Garcia, canvassed for support around the St. George area.
Garcia, a longtime city employee and former commissioner for the Department of Sanitation from 2014 to 2020, started her day outside the St. George Green Market near the intersection of St. Mark’s Place and Hyatt Street to speak with locals and add to the signatures she needs to get access to the ballot.
“I love Staten Island. I’m out here all the time, and I know that I am the best person in this race to represent Staten Island,” she said. “This is going to be a very important election.” ....
