Appleton had few local options for design of new public library


Question: Why did Appleton select a firm from Chicago to design the new library? It seems to me that we would want to keep the money in northeast Wisconsin rather than send it out of state.
Answer: Appleton received proposals from 11 architects or architectural teams for the design of its $26.4 million public library, and none of them was strictly local.
Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction of Appleton was part of one proposal, partnering with Gensler of Chicago and Mead & Hunt of Wauwatosa, but the trio wasn t among the three finalists.
Hoffman has some library experience with schools, but they don t have that high-level library experience, so they were teaming up with Gensler for the library expertise, project manager Dean Gazza said. ....

Milwaukee Youth Arts Center breaks ground for expansion project

The
Milwaukee Youth Arts Centerbroke ground Tuesday to mark the start of an expansion project within its main building at 325 W. Walnut St., Milwaukee.
The center plans to renovate 42,000 square feet of underused space in the lower level of the building to add two new rehearsal halls, six studios and six small group instruction rooms, and upgrade its mainstage hall on the facility’s main level.
The MYAC campus, which is the home of Milwaukee children’s theater group First Stage and the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, consists of two buildings near the intersection of West Walnut Street and Vel R. Phillips Avenue: the main building at 325 W. Walnut St. and another building across the street at 1702 N. 4 ....

Ground will be ceremonially broken Tuesday to expand a youth arts center just north of downtown Milwaukee. But it will be done with a sledgehammer.
The organization will expand into the lower level of the building, adding two rehearsal halls, six studios and six small-group instruction rooms. The existing space, spread over a first floor and mezzanine level, includes offices, five rehearsal spaces, nine studio rooms and two practice rooms. ....

A new building permit application submitted to the city reveals a change in course for the future of the Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 790 N. Van Buren St.
Ascendant Holdings introduced a plan in 2016 to build a hotel tower atop the three-story building. But those plans, ultimately approved in late 2017 to include a 14-story tower with 215 rooms, haven’t advanced to construction. ....
