Brooklyn Dumpling Shop to bring automat dining back to Philly, where Horn & Hardart popularized it 120 years ago
Horn & Hardart opened the first automat in the United States in Philadelphia in 1902. The concept grew in popularity, becoming ubiquitous in Philly and New York until fast food helped lead to its disappearance. Now, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is bringing the concept back to Philly with the opening of a Center City location on Dec. 20, 2023.
