Updated 4/19/2021 10:33 AM McHenry County Clerk Joe Tirio erred by removing a referendum question from the November ballot that would have asked voters to abolish McHenry Township as a unit of government, Illinois appellate judges ruled Thursday. The opinion, written by Illinois 2nd District Appellate Court Justice Ann B. Jorgensen, walked back the decision of McHenry County Circuit Court Judge Kevin G. Costello to dismiss a lawsuit brought against Tirio by the McHenry Township board of trustees.
The litigation sought to reinstate the measure on the ballot ahead of the fall election. The ruling pleased McHenry Township Trustee Steve Verr, who supports eliminating the township as a taxing entity and voted with a majority of trustees to take the measure to the fall 2020 ballot. ....

Updated 4/7/2021 12:23 PM A referendum to abolish the McHenry Township Road District was on track to be rejected by voters, preliminary election results show, the culmination of a hard-fought battle to eliminate the separate taxing body and place the responsibilities of maintaining the township s roads under the jurisdiction of the McHenry Township Board. Unofficial election results reported by the McHenry County Clerk s Office showed voters rejected the referendum by a margin of 80.4% to 19.6%, as of 9:45 p.m. Tuesday night. The results do not include all mail-in or provisionally cast ballots. ....

Judge rules against McHenry Township Highway Commissioner s challenge against huge tax levy cuts
Updated 12/22/2020 11:34 AM A judge ruled against McHenry Township Highway Commissioner Jim Condon in a lawsuit Monday brought against the local government s trustees over their decision to cut road district property tax levies by about 30% this month. With the decision by 22nd Judicial Circuit Associate Judge Kevin G. Costello, the township road district s total tax levy of $2,095,000 approved by the trustees will for now remain below the $3 million levy Condon originally sought.
The highway commissioner filed the lawsuit against the township s board of trustees last week after a motion to pass a levy far smaller than Condon s $3 million proposal carried 3-1 with the support of Trustees Bob Anderson, Steve Verr and Mike Rakestraw, the same trio that denied McHenry Township Supervisor Craig Adams from participating in the same meeting remotely d ....
