Sheridan County commissioners awarded the bid Tuesday for construction of additional parking at the Sheridan County Airport. The project, which would add 96 more parking spots at the airport, drew personal endorsement from County Commission Chairman Nick Siddle. Commissioners voted unanimously to award the bid for the project to Wagner Ranch Services for the low bid of just under $571,000. Stephen Mullins, stamping his pottery, wants to make Sheridan a "community clay center." Stephen Mullins opened his Red Bison Studio with the desire to be a community clay center for Sheridan. Before COVID-19 forced the shutdown last year, Mullins taught one or two pottery classes a week. He said at the beginning, he had a membership program as well, but rising production led to space and time conflicts between members and production, so he pulled back on membership and continued the classes. A variant of the COVID-19 virus – known as the “California variant” – has been detected in Sheridan County. Dr. John Addlesperger, Sheridan Memorial Hospital chief medical officer, said that variant is the only one detected here so far. But, he said, that likely isn’t the only variant that’s here. Dr. Addlesperger said the UK variant of the virus is, in fact, the most common variant but hasn’t yet been identified in Sheridan. Signs at walk-in areas around the Brook Mine have been changed. Jeff Barron, project manager and associate principal of WWC Engineering, said signs were required along the perimeter of the mine by permit documents that have authorized mining to resume. Barron said the “no trespassing” component has been eliminated from signs anywhere there is a walk-in area around the mine site north of Sheridan. Scott Stults, an assistant superintendent with Sheridan County School District 2, which owns the building, said that’s the hope at this time.
