“FRED” is now the sixth named storm of the 2021 Hurricane Season
A Hurricane Hunter airplane found former Tropical Storm Fred barely had the closed circulation necessary for a tropical depression or storm, the National Hurricane Center said in its 11 a.m. advisory. But the storm may still strengthen when it reaches the open water of the Florida Straits.
The disturbance in the northeast Caribbean was upgraded to Tropical Storm Fred late Tuesday evening just south of Puerto Rico. The storm has the potential to affect a large portion of Florida this weekend with heavy rain and high winds, although the magnitude, location and timing of those impacts are still uncertain.
