Experts investigate the role of IL-26 in COVID-19

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have shown that patients with acute COVID-19 infection have increased levels of the cytokine IL-26 in their blood. Moreover, high IL-26 levels correlate with an exaggerated inflammatory response that signifies severe cases of the disease. The findings, which are presented in Frontiers in Immunology, indicate that IL-26 is a potential biomarker for severe COVID-19. ....

Novel Polymer Ink Exhibits High Stability in Air and at High Temperatures

Novel Polymer Ink Exhibits High Stability in Air and at High Temperatures
Written by AZoMApr 22 2021
At Linköping University, Sweden, scientists have designed a stable, highly conductive polymer ink. The breakthrough opens the door for novel printed electronics with high energy efficiency.
The ink can be deposited by simply spraying the solution onto a surface, making organic electronic devices easier and cheaper to manufacture. Image Credit: Thor Balkhed.
The study findings have been published in the
Nature Communications journal.
Electrically conducting polymers have enabled the growth of lightweight and flexible electronic components like batteries, transistors, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and organic biosensors. ....

Probiotic supplements increase the diversity of intestinal bacteria in extremely preterm infants

Probiotic supplements increase the diversity of intestinal bacteria in extremely preterm infants
Extremely preterm infants can suffer from a life-threatening inflammation of the gut. A new clinical study has shown that supplements of a lactic acid bacterium may have positive effects by increasing the diversity of intestinal bacteria in these infants.
The study has been led by researchers at Linköping University, Sweden, and published in the scientific journal
Cell Reports Medicine.
A litre of milk weighs a kilogram. Most infants who are born extremely prematurely weigh less than that. An infant who should have developed and grown for three more months in the protective environment of the mother s womb is, of course, extremely vulnerable. ....
