What a wild year it’s been. Everyone on Earth has been impacted, not the least of which professional sports leagues. The World Surf League has certainly felt the full brunt of the pandemic. When Erik Logan took over a year ago, the WSL was on a high – Italo Ferreira had just won a world title at Pipe on the last heat of the year. Carissa Moore had won her fourth crown. Things were definitely looking up. Then 2020 happened. A pandemic never before seen gripped the Earth. The World Surf League cancelled the entirety of its season. ....

World Surf League Cancels 2021 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

The World Surf League continues to deal with every curve ball the pandemic throws at it. This time the League was forced to cancel the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, one of the tour’s most historic events, after an agreement on quarantine could not be reached with the local Victorian Government. The WSL had just announced earlier in the week that the Newcastle Pro had been officially added to the tour. Dropping Bells means there are still three events on the Australian schedule including Margaret River and the Gold Coast. ....

World Surf League Announces 4th Championship Tour Stop in Australia

After losing the Sunset Open and the Santa Cruz Pro (postponed) to the pandemic, the World Surf League announced yesterday that it had added a fourth stop to the Australian leg of the CT. The Newcastle Pro will open up the tour down under on April 1, according to the League.
The WSL also announced it had received permission from the New South Wales government to charter a flight for its athletes, where it would then quarantine in Sydney prior to the event. Officials from surfing’s professional entity also said it would continue to work with the Australian government on pandemic regulations as it moves through the four stops – which includes Bells, Margaret River, and the Gold Coast. ....

Coast surfers head home after tour stops canned

The league also deciding to postpone the CT Santa Cruz Pro, which had been scheduled for February 2 - 12.
The WSL issued a statement saying the decision to postpone the last planned event of the US leg of the tour was based primarily on the surge of COVID-19 cases in California.
The postponement is also heavily influenced by the length of time our athletes have been away from home, the WSL said.
And by the complexities of global travel during this pandemic, which would have caused significant logistic challenges for athletes and staff to travel home and return to California for the event. ....

Tuscaloosa: The University of Alabama is requiring that students who will live on campus for the spring 2021 semester must be tested for coronavirus, officials said. The tests must happen within seven days of their arrival, no later than Jan. 19. The spring semester will begin Jan. 13. The university will offer free testing, or students can choose to get tested before returning to Tuscaloosa. Test results are expected to be provided within 24 hours to three days. The spring reentry testing is only required for those living on campus, including in residence halls and fraternity and sorority houses. In addition to reentry testing, the university is continuing to conduct a variety of testing for all students, including sentinel, for-cause, exposure and symptomatic testing.
