Then the shocking realization that the nation’s largest manufacturer of DDT had once used the ocean as a huge dumping ground — and that as many as half a million barrels of its acid waste had been poured straight into the water.
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The federal investigation into the historic toxic waste dumpsites off the coast of Los Angeles and Catalina, an island southwest of the second largest U.S. city, exposed a far more extensive spread of DDT and other toxic chemicals than anyone had previously estimated.
LOS ANGELES -- After an exhaustive historical investigation into the barrels of DDT waste reportedly dumped decades ago near Catalina Island, federal regulators concluded that the toxic pollution in the deep ocean could be far worse -- and far more sweeping -- than what scientists anticipated.

The area, known as Operable Unit 2 (OU2), is where treated and untreated wood was stored during historic wood treatment operations. EPA is seeking public comment on the proposed plan for OU2 through June 30, 2022, and will hold an in-person and virtual public meeting tomorrow to explain the proposed plan and answer questions.
