JAKARTA, Jan 18 (Reuters): Indonesia s central bank will likely keep interest rates steady on Thursday but could cut them as early as the first quarter of 2021 as the country continues to grapple with the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic, a Reuters poll showed on Monday.
All but two of 25 analysts in a Reuters poll expected Bank Indonesia (BI) to keep the benchmark 7-day reverse repurchase rate at 3.75%, with two others predicting a 25 basis point rate reduction this week.

Thailand: Samut Sakhon sees big jump in Covid-19 cases after testing at factories


BANGKOK, Jan 17 (The Nation Thailand/ANN): The number of Covid-19 cases in Samut Sakhon province rose to over 4,000 cases on Saturday after the Provincial Health Office conducted proactive screening in factories.
As of 5pm, the number of patients increased by 335 to 4,359 989 Thais and 3,370 migrant workers. Of the total, 636 Thais and 316 migrant workers were hospitalised.
Separately, the provincial agencies opened a fourth field hospital at Nadi subdistrict Municipality in Muang Samut Sakhon district which can treat 350 patients.
As most patients at the first field hospital in the province s Central Shrimp Market had been discharged, we would undertake a cleaning operation before reopening the market at the end of January, the provincial officials said. ....

Covid-19 cases surging in Karachi due to 'ideal weather'

Covid-19 cases have started surging again in Karachi as its current cold weather with moderate humidity is most suitable for the spread of the virus, while its dense population with millions living in slums and regularly-held “super spreading events” are other contributing factors behind the surge, experts said on Thursday.
“Cold weather with moderate humidity in the range of 45-60 per cent is the ideal weather for the spread of the coronavirus and that is why its cases are surging in Karachi where its positivity was 15 per cent today as compared to national positivity rate of 7 per cent,” Dr Shahzad Ali Khan, a professor of public health at the Health Service Academy, Islamabad, told The News on Thursday. ....
