Indonesia's car sales surge following luxury tax cut


JAKARTA, May 23 (Xinhua): The Indonesian government has been successful in boosting car sales following a policy on the cut of a luxury tax, locally known as PPnBM, for cars with 1,500 cc up to 2,500 cc.
The government provides the incentive with a 100-percent discount in the March-May 2021 period, a 50-percent discount in the June-August period, and a 25-percent discount in the September-December period for the medium category and the 4x2 type of vehicles with segments up to 1,500 cc.
The Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) said that the government s policy on luxury tax cut as incorporated in a finance ministerial regulation and an industry ministerial regulation on the tax on luxury goods sales has been proven effective as indicated by the increase in the car sales in the country. ....

HANOI, May 23 (Xinhua): Over 69 million voters across Vietnam are casting their votes on Sunday to elect deputies to the country s National Assembly (NA) and members of People s Councils at all levels.
Held every five years, the election this year started at 7am local time Sunday at around 80,000 polling stations nationwide, Vietnam News Agency reported.
A total of 866 candidates are vying for 500 seats at the 15th NA, and 3,726 deputies will be selected from 6,199 candidates to enter provincial-level People s Councils, with also 22,952 deputies to district-level People s Councils and 242,312 deputies to commune-level People s Councils, according to Vietnam s National Election Council. ....

MANILA, May 22 (Xinhua): The Philippines Department of Health (DOH) reported on Saturday 6,831 new Covid-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the South-East Asian country to 1,178,217.
The death toll climbed to 19,946 after 183 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the Covid-19 infections in Metro Manila and its adjacent provinces continue to drop, noting that daily cases in these areas have decreased from around 3,000 to 4,000 in the past weeks to about 1,500 plus this week. ....

Laos: Covid-19 rules updated, some strengthened, others eased as Covid-19 cases continued to surge


VIENTIANE, May 22 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The government has intensified Covid-19 prevention and control restrictions, while easing some where appropriate, as it extends measures to contain the outbreak for another 15 days until June 4.
New restrictions include the closure of beauty salons, barber shops, tourist attractions, food gardens, casinos, and gaming shops.
The new measures come into effect on Friday (May 21) and replace the previous ones, which included a lockdown until May 20.
Processing plants and handicraft production sites located in red-zone villages (infected areas) must also close, except those that have on-site dormitories for employees.
Similar exception is also extended to factories that produce consumer goods, medicines, medical equipment, and personal protective equipment for use by medical staff. ....
