Oil rebounds to US$66 ahead of OPEC+ meeting, India's Covid-19 surge weighs

OPEC+ brings forward ministerial monitoring meeting to Tuesday India s COVID-19 deaths near 200,000
LONDON, April 27 (Reuters): Oil rebounded to $66 a barrel on Tuesday on speculation that a meeting of producer group OPEC+ may tweak oil output policy to address India s coronavirus crisis that could dent fuel demand.
OPEC and allies will hold a monitoring meeting on Tuesday instead of April 28 as planned earlier. A technical meeting on Monday had voiced concern about surging Covid-19 cases, although it kept its 2021 oil demand forecast unchanged.
Brent crude was up 58 cents, or 0.9%, at $66.23 a barrel by 0820 GMT, after dropping 0.7% on Monday. US oil gained 79 cents, or 1.3%, to $62.70. ....

Germany s Green party on Monday named its co-chair Annalena Baerbock as their candidate to succeed Angela Merkel, throwing down the gauntlet to the chancellor s conservatives who were locked in increasingly vicious infighting for her crown.
Trained lawyer Baerbock, 40, became the first chancellor candidate for the party, as surging support for Greens brings it within reach of the chancellery.
Both Baerbock and her fellow co-chair Robert Habeck, 51, had coveted the job to lead the party into elections on September 26.

Not long ago, democracy seemed to be surging in the region. But in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and elsewhere, it is in trouble.
Late last month, foreign officials in army regalia toasted their hosts in
Naypyitaw, the bunkered capital built by Myanmar s military. Ice clinked in frosted glasses. A lavish spread had been laid out for the foreign dignitaries in honor of Myanmar s Armed Forces Day.
That very day, the military, which had seized power February 1, gunned down more than 100 of its own citizens. Far from publicly condemning the brutality, the military representatives from neighbouring countries India, China, Thailand and Vietnam among them posed grinning with the generals, legitimising their putsch. ....
