Tonight, we are going to talk about democracy, and that word, i think we have probably talked more about democracy than the last four or five years that i had in all of my time as a journalist. Even as a topic seems a longer. We all know, america is a democracy, and there is a history that ....
apprehended by local authorities. and so we breathe a sigh of relief for now. but sadly, these kinds of mass shootings happen every day in america so far this year. and you mentioned today in a really powerful and impassioned speech on the senate floor, you are two children, who were actually in a lockdown today, as this unfolded. how are they doing? and really, what did you tell them as a father? but also as a lawmaker who is in a body that potentially has the power to do something about all this? that s right. they are physically safe. but you asked me how are my children doing how or any of our children doing? do we really know the answer? what are the long term traumatic effects of, basically telling our children, we can t protect you? and the best we can do is to tell you to hide. we are a nation living in fear. and some seem to think that this is the price that we have to pay for freedom. i reject that. it s a strange kind of freedom that causes our children ....

welcome to the programme. the united nations says thousands of children may be among the dead, buried in the rubble, after the earthquakes and aftershocks that hit turkey and north west syria. the known death toll now stands at 7,200. an international rescue effort is underway. and sorely needed. there are still thousands of collapsed buildings to search. turkish journalists say they are getting voice messages and live locators from people still trapped under the rubble. president erdogan today declared a three month state of emergency in 10 provinces. across the whole region that is 23m people. and the challenges they face are enormous the power has been disrupted, the roads damaged, the weather is freezing. they are appalling conditions for rescue teams in turkey, but imagine how much more difficult it must be across the border in north west syria. there is no safe route in for the aid. most of the work in rebel held areas, is being done by the white helmets, who are expe ....
