Another 463 people died of the disease in the last 24 hours in TN, taking the toll to 26,128, the third highest in the country after Maharashtra (97,394) and Karnataka (30,531). Almost two-third of the 463 had comorbidities like diabetes or hypertension. For more than a month, Tamil Nadu’s has reported at least one death for every 100 confirmed cases. On Friday, there were 71 Covid deaths in Chennai, the highest, followed by Chengalpet with 38. In Coimbatore, one-third of the 31 who died did so within 48 hours of hospitalisation. One was declared ‘brought dead’ to hospital. ....
A customer, Jayalakshmi, who was injured in the incident COIMBATORE: A sub-inspector of police was placed under suspension on Monday after a video of him beating up customers and employees of a restaurant at Gandhipuram on Sunday night went viral on social media. B Mohanraj of Ram Nagar owns Sri Raja Hotel at Gadhipuram. Around 10pm on Sunday, a cop from Kattoor police station came to the restaurant and told Mohanraj to down the shutters immediately as inspector Latha would be coming for night patrol. As the customers were having dinner in the restaurant, he kept the shutter half-closed. Around 10.20pm, sub-inspector Muthu, 36, attached to the Kattoor (law & order) police, entered the restaurant with a baton in hand. ....

In his one-hour long customary address, marking the beginning of the assembly session in the new year, Purohit said the government, under the “able stewardship” of chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, continues to be guided by the spirit of the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa and has made tremendous strides towards realizing the vision of making Tamil Nadu the numero uno state in the country. “The consistent focus of the state government on providing good governance to the people is now widely recognised… Responsiveness in governance is the watchword of this government,” Purohit said, amid loud thumping of treasury bench ....
Representative image CHENNAI: The state government on Sunday allowed colleges to reopen and conduct classes for all undergraduate and postgraduate students on February 8. Offline teaching for Classes IX and XI in schools can also start from that date, a statement issued by chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday said. The state, which allowed reopening of colleges for final year students from December 7, 2020, and schools for Classes X and XII from January 19, 2021, has now allowed hostels in educational institutions to function. Movie theatres, including multiplexes and screens in malls, will be allowed to operate at 100% seating capacity from February 1, the CM said, announcing fresh relaxations from curbs initiated to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the state. ....

DINDIGUL: Eleven tribal children in the Sukkavali cluster in the Ayyalur forest range in the district will be the first from their villages to attend higher education as their education will be sponsored by Ponnammal Educational Trust. They also have been made ambassadors for slender loris, that thrive in the forest range, by SEEDS Trust. Ponnammal Educational Trust will give Rs 1 lakh to each student through through SEEDS Trust. PAWS-Bosch has been funding slender loris conservation under its CSR activity through SEEDS Trust which has been interacting with students on nature conservation. The 11 students were appointed as student ambassadors for the slender loris conservation project in the area. ....
