KITTERY, Maine Alec Liberman feels well-equipped to conduct a heart-racing rescue, thanks to his military background and his career in fitness training. Braving a mixture of snow flurries, heavy wind and the Piscataqua River running beneath him, Liberman got his chance to be a hero Thursday morning for a small animal in distress. Liberman rushed from his houseboat to save a raccoon that got stuck on a cement beam for several hours under the Badger’s Island Bridge. “I think it’s just kind of funny,” he said Friday. “It seems to be getting some attention. I just kind of saw a need and kind of thought it’d be fun. I thought it’d be a wacky story over drinks, I didn’t think it’d be a story that went beyond that.” ....

On Earth Day, Mainer Alec Liberman, 33, faced this dilemma when he saw a raccoon on the bridge that connects Badgers Island to Kittery. Liberman told NEWS CENTER Maine that he saw the raccoon walking back and forth on along a pylon on Thursday morning. He said he called animal control, but got the sense that they would not respond, so he decided to take matters into his own hands two hours later when he saw the animal curling up due to cold and windy weather. ....
