It appears the third wave of Covid-19 in Thailand, with top entertainment venues in the Thong Lor area as its epicentre, is more severe than the previous two rounds. Virologists have detected the UK strain of the virus, which spreads 1.7 times faster than the variants this country has previously coped with. This is alarming.
With the new spike, the total number of cases has surpassed 30,000. There are fears that new cases will soon hit 1,000 a day. Now the outbreak linked to the Bangkok cluster has reached at least 32 provinces, with total new infections at 604 across the country.

The South Bangkok District Court on Friday gave a one-month suspended jail sentence to actor Techin Ploypetch for violating the emergency decree by holding a birthday party at a hotel in Bangkok six weeks ago.
The party was the centre of a cluster of Covid-19 infections in Bangkok.
The court initially sentenced 31-year-old Techin, better known as DJ Matoom, 31, to two months in jail and fined him 20,000 baht for breaching the emergency decree by holding his birthday party at Banyan Tree Hotel on Jan 8.

Matoom: Under pressure
Celebrities are facing more pressure to be transparent and announce their full timelines before they tested positive for Covid-19.

Rayong provincial authorities allowed markets to reopen on Thursday after they were ordered closed following a surge of Covid-19 infections in the eastern region.
The province has seen no new cases for three consecutive days.
Deputy provincial governor Anan Nakniyom said the Covid-19 situation was improving, although the province will remain a "maximum and strict control" zone until the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) declares otherwise.
He said easing Covid-19 restrictions in Rayong and a change of status from "maximum and strict control" zone to "control zone" was expected to be discussed by the CCSA on Friday.

Thai stars take Covid-19 test after DJ announces he's positive

Covid-19 has become a hot topic in the entertainment industry and some stars have gone for virus tests after well-known host Techin Ploypetch, or DJ Matoom, posted a video clip on Instagram saying he was infected with the coronavirus and apologised to everyone affected. He also posted pictures of himself in hospital.
Friends in the entertainment industry, as well as Fanclub, commented to encourage him to overcome and recover from the virus.
DJ Matoom first met an infected but then-asymptomatic friend on January 9. It was later, on January 19, that friends called and informed him that the man was infected. Matoom said he went to hospital immediately to check. After a test showed that he, too, was infected, he reported the results to everyone.
