Jurors convicted Jeffrey J. "James" Exon Monday of crimes that included first-degree murder in the malnutrition death of his 2-year-old daughter.
Opening arguments were made Tuesday in the trial of Topekan Jeffrey J. "James" Exon, charged in the malnutrition death of his daughter, Aurora Exon.
Jeffrey James Exon told police his 2 1/2-year-old daughter had been "starving herself" in the days before she died at their home, according to a court document. Topeka police responding Jan. 5 to Exon's home found that the toddler had apparently been dead for several days, according to an affidavit in support of a search warrant submitted by Topeka Police Detective Lance Green. "Responding officers reported that the child appeared to be in rigor mortis, stiffening of muscles which usually sets in 12 hours after death," it said.
