MILAN (Reuters) - When mayor Filippo Tripoli got a phone call from Telecom Italia last December to cable his town in Sicily he was taken by surprise. Bagheria, population 55,000, had already been cabled by rival Open Fiber and another network seemed extravagant.

“It knocked me sideways,” Tripoli said. “What’s the point of cabling a place that has already been cabled once.”
Open Fiber finished work in Bagheria earlier this year and is now busy resurfacing the streets. Telecom Italia (TIM) has just started, but could be finished by the end of the year. Cost? Some 4.5 million euros ($5.4 million) for Open Fiber and around 3 million euros for TIM. ....

Chile fast-tracking 5G roll-out, but with tight rules on security, official says

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chile is fast-tracking an ambitious plan to roll out a 5G mobile technology network across most of the country within two years, a senior official told Reuters, but will assure strong oversight at a time of simmering global tensions over cybersecurity.

With the United States and China at odds over cybersecurity and data protection, Chile, which counts both countries as top trade partners, will keep doors open to any company that adheres to its strict rules, Telecommunications Undersecretary Pamela Gidi told Reuters.
“As long as (the regulations) are respected, we neither have nor are we going to influence the supply chain nor the nationality of the companies,” she said. ....

Dutch telco KPN sues Sweden's Ericsson over patents

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -KPN NV, the largest Dutch telecommunications company, has filed a patent-infringement complaint against Ericsson in a district court in Texas, the Swedish telecom equipment maker said on Thursday.
The issue revolves around Ericsson’s alleged infringement of five KPN patents covering various wireless network functions.
In a court filing, KPN said it had offered to issue licences to Ericsson for the infringed patents but the Swedish company did not obtain a licence.
“We refrain from making any further comments since this is an ongoing legal matter,” an Ericsson spokeswoman said. ....

Bulgaria to hold new 5G auction after legal challenge

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria’s telecoms regulator said on Wednesday it would hold a new auction on April 6 for three 5G licences after its decision to allocate them without competition was contested in court by the country’s leading telecoms operator Vivacom.
The Communication Regulation Commission (CRC) said its decision to launch a new process was backed by the three main telecoms operators.
“The regulator decided to amend its decision to speed up the process and avoid lengthy court proceedings,” CRC head Ivan Dimitrov told Reuters, saying the auction date was April 6. ....
