But even with some 20 inches of rain forecasted here, meteorologists do not believe it s going to be enough to spill like pontchartrain over its banks. however, the army corps of engineers monitoring the situation closely by the hour. there is late word tonight that a levee in plaqueman parrish, ten miles southeast of new orleans here, that the levee there has been breached in at least three spots, although at this point it doesn t appear to be too serious because only voluntary evacuation orders have been put into effect for that particular region. but obviously a very fluid situation as these storms always are, and one that s being monitored very closely. harris: the last words you want to hear in conjunction with the name new orleans is a levee breach of any kind. i know they re watching that situation very closely. one of the impacts for that city so many years ago with hurricane katrina was financially. it was just a punch to the gut. so i see people milling about. ....

harris: maria, thank you very much. with the problems just beginning in the gulf states, thousands of americans still without electricity on the east coast tonight. nearly a week after hurricane irene hit, the worst of it, the 45 people now confirmed dead. but another lingering effect for so many people, the power lines destroyed as trees were taken out by wind and rain. and horrible flooding. more than 260,000 people in these nine states that you ll see coming up on a map here, still waiting for utility crews to restore their power. i understand we don t have the map. president obama set to visit hard hit new jersey tomorrow. at one point 1.5 million people in new jersey alone had no electricity. that number now is down quite a bit. at last check, it was just a little bit more than 17,000. it has obviously been an active and expensive hurricane season so far. the white house asking congress to set aside more money for disaster relief with the federal emergency management agency ....
